All structures can only be built from valid schematics, which must be designed in a way that follows the constraints of the universe. Schematics can be designed by any player, faction, team, artificial intelligence, or overly skilled dog.
Schematics can also be designed and withheld until used. Factions may put R&D efforts into creating new offensive structures during the planning of a large attack, or could put efforts into designing new more efficient manufacturing facilities. Enterprising individuals could even start the space race, attempting to design new structures to wage war in the cosmos.
This Schematics concept is critical to a fully distributed gameplay, empowering players to evolve the game and lore.
Players can get started creating their own Schematics by heading to the R&D tab of structs.so. Keep in mind that the more full-featured and powerful your schematic is, the harder it'll be to design and build.

Once a valid schema hash is discovered, a player can “patent” it to commit it to the world, giving them the rights for access control within the universe. Patented schematics are available for all to see but can only be used in the manufacturing process by individuals or groups that have been given permission.
There are potentially licensing payments that could be built directly into this process too, rewarding the architects that build new items.
